On 3 July 2021, the first measures from the European SUP directive will come into effect. SUP stands for Single Use Plastics. With this directive, the European Union wants to reduce single-use plastics and collect and recycle more plastic.
The SUP legislation also has consequences for some packaging types, such as drinking cups, bags or wrappers, containers for foodstuffs and cutlery.
As a result, a number of articles from our range will no longer be available. For several articles alternatives will be replaced, which we will put on our website in due course.
Additional legislation by 2023
In March 2022, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management published the ministerial regulation on single-use plastic products in the Netherlands.
The regulation will apply to both plastic packaging and cups whose function is to be eaten or drunk directly from. In addition, the regulation will also apply for products which containing plastic such as cardboard coffee cups and salad bowls with a plastic coating.
The products are divided into two categories. Is the food consumed on the sport or not (on-the-go).
The disposable cups and packaging will be discouraged for consumption on-the-go. There need to be an reusable alternative offerd at all times. In addition, the items in question may only be given out to consumers at an additional cost.
2024
Plastic disposable cups and packaging will be bannend by Jan. 1, 2024 in of consumption on-the-spot, unless the cups and packaging will be reusable or completely recycled. Herewith re-use becomes the norm.
Currently recycling is only applicable to PET products. Other materials then PET may no longer be offered for on-the-spot consumption by the 1st of January 2024.
